History of Orbs

If you are a student of science, you would not believe in the existence of so called ghost or spiritual orbs that are seen in still photographs and even in videos made from hand held camcorders. But there are score of people who believe that circular spots, mostly pale yellow but also seen in other colors, seen on photos taken at nights in abandoned places are not natural but are something paranormal that cannot be explained. These circular spots in still photographs suddenly increased in their incidence with the launch of digital cameras and are today seen not just in mystic, abandoned places but also in bedrooms and party places.

There are many interesting facts about orbs. They are sometimes seen in isolation but then there are also clusters of orbs in the same picture. They can be of any color as has been proved with multicolor orbs but yet we encounter off white orbs mostly. They can be sharp and crisp, yet mostly they appear fuzzy and cloudy. Orbs are seen in photos taken at almost all places but they tend to be associated with haunted places more than other places which is one reason why there is so much mystery surrounding orbs in general.

It is interesting to know that these white spots seen on still photos were not called orbs till late 1990’s. May be it has to do with the frequency with which they were identified in still photos after this period that prompted many to link them with paranormal activities. If we talk about the history of orbs, they were first identified or seen in still photos that date back to the earliest part of the 20th century. The only reason paranormal researchers did not evince interest in these orbs in pictures is because of their rarity and not much importance given to them by the people.

It was only after publication of ‘Photographs of the Unknown’ written by Rickard and Kelly in 1980 that orbs in pictures became popular. Interestingly, the writers termed these orbs as natural though they too were fascinated by these spots and preferred to call them unusual. However, it was when there was this sudden discovery of orbs in photos taken at so called haunted places that the world stood up and took note of this strange phenomenon. In the years to follow, there was a deluge of such photos with people coming up with proof of orbs in their photos and presenting them to the researchers.

It was the airing of the serial Most Haunted on UK cable TV that there was a renewed interest in orbs around the world. There was another angle given to orbs by the producers of the TV series as they maintained that orbs were indeed a manifestation of spirits. So convincing was the presentation that thousands of spectators started to believe about spirituality of orbs.

However, with passage of time, orbs became much too common and people saw them in photos taken by their digital cameras in homes and outdoors that convinced people that these were nothing but a dust particle or some insect on the lens of the camera at the same instant as when the photo was taken.
